Dong housing

There is diversity in abundance in Copenhagen’s Northwest Quarter. BIG carried out the "Homes for all" mission for the non-profit housing association Lejerbo, and the project was completed in 2017. The result is a unique, architectural product that nearly extends as far as the eye can see.

66 social housing units wind through Copenhagen’s Northwest Quarter, built up of boxes placed on top of each other. The wooden façade is made of ThermoWood from Frøslev Træ which carries the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. It alternates between wood and large window sections. The building and interior design are far from common.

In early 2018, BIG and Lejerbo were awarded by the Danish Association of Architects (Den Danske Arkitektsammenslutning) and given the Lille-Arne Award for prioritising spatial qualities and building strategy on a strictly affordable housing budget. The building is in fact quite unique and sets new standards for social housing.

The architect behind the project is Bjarke Ingels Group A/S. A decision was made to clad the façade with ThermoWood from Frøslev Træ. The wood is heat-treated using a process consisting of heat and steam, providing exceptional durability and dimensional stability so that the project can last for many years to come. Over time, the wood will turn into a beautiful, silver-grey colour that fits nicely into the cityscape

Wood and profiles

1 cubic metre of wood saves the atmosphere 2 tonnes of CO2… that is the case when wood is replaced by a conventional construction material as wood stores CO2 and at the same time saves the atmosphere for the CO2 caused by the production of a steel or concrete product. Source: Træ.dk
