The school of Frelloskolen in Varde with room for 900 students was completed in 2021. The school was inspired by Otto Frello, born in Varde, who was an artist and illustrator. His influence is especially visible inside where several of the rooms and the common areas are inspired by his works of art, especially ”The Golden Room” which is now also a room at the school.

The exterior of the building is primarily constructed of light brick but is beautifully supplemented by areas with ThermoWood from Frøslev. The soft wood panelling creates fairytale outdoor areas with room for breaks and play. The materials in wood were used throughout the entire school and have a calming effect in an environment that is usually somewhat busy.

The target was to celebrate fairytales and imagination, and carefully selected materials were therefore used inside as well as outside. Frøslev Træ supplied striped and perforated panels in peeled pine for the interior. That connects the entire school with natural materials, and ThermoWood with heat treatment with no use of toxins or harmful gases is perfect for an environment with many children.

GPP Arkitekter worked with turnkey contractor C.C. Contractor A/S to bring this imaginative school to life. Labland/Faber Have made the landscape blend into the beautiful building. The building owner is Varde Municipality.
